Origin story

Dogecoin was created as a joke. In late 2013 Jackson Palmer, then at Adobe in Sydney, tweeted about investing in a coin based on the Shiba Inu "doge" meme. Billy Markus, a software engineer at IBM in Portland, saw it and built the coin from Luckycoin, itself derived from Litecoin.

Dogecoin launched on December 6, 2013. Its friendly community quickly became known for tipping and charity drives, from sending the Jamaican bobsled team to the 2014 Winter Olympics to sponsoring a NASCAR car.

Unlike Bitcoin, Dogecoin has no supply cap. Since 2015 it issues a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block, about one minute apart. Its price history is dominated by social media waves, most famously posts by Elon Musk.

Founders: Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer.
