Elon Musk hosted Saturday Night Live on May 8, 2021. Fans had pushed DOGE to record prices in the days before, hoping for a boost. During a Weekend Update sketch, Musk played a "financial expert" and joked that Dogecoin was "a hustle".

The price fell during and after the broadcast. It is a classic example of "buy the rumor, sell the news": the hype built before the event, and many traders sold once it arrived. Our chart shows the closes around these dates; compare them with the 2021 peak marker.

The episode remains one of the clearest cases of a single celebrity moment moving a coin. See our explainer on why DOGE pumps.
