Origin story
Sonic is the successor to Fantom, a fast, Ethereum compatible layer 1 founded in 2018 by South Korean computer scientist Ahn Byung Ik. DeFi developer Andre Cronje became its best known builder.
In late 2024 Fantom relaunched as Sonic with a new chain and the S token, with FTM convertible one to one.
