Origin story
BNB began in July 2017 as a token sold in the initial coin offering for Binance, the exchange founded by Changpeng Zhao. Holders first used it mainly for discounts on trading fees.
Binance later moved BNB onto its own chains: BNB Beacon Chain (first called Binance Chain) in April 2019 and BNB Smart Chain, an Ethereum compatible network, in September 2020. Binance burns BNB on a regular schedule to cut the supply toward 100 million.
