Stellar was launched in July 2014 by Jed McCaleb, a co founder of Ripple and the founder of Mt. Gox, together with lawyer Joyce Kim. It started as a fork of Ripple's code and is run by the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation.
In 2015 Stellar switched to its own Stellar Consensus Protocol, designed by David Mazieres of Stanford. The network focuses on cheap cross border payments and issuing assets such as stablecoins.
