During the GameStop short squeeze in late January 2021, online communities turned to Dogecoin. On January 28, 2021 DOGE rose several hundred percent in a day, helped by posts from Reddit groups and a Musk tweet of a magazine cover reading "Dogue".

Dogecoin is the people's crypto Feb 4, 2021

On February 4, 2021 Musk posted "Dogecoin is the people's crypto", followed by more Doge memes, and the price rose that day. Over the next months his posts became a regular market event for DOGE.

2021 peak May 7, 2021

Dogecoin's rise in spring 2021 was driven by social media, the April 20 "Doge Day" campaign and anticipation of Musk's appearance on Saturday Night Live. The date shown is the highest daily close in our series for 2021.

Musk on SNL May 8, 2021

Elon Musk hosted Saturday Night Live on May 8, 2021. Fans had pushed DOGE to record prices in the days before, hoping for a boost. During a Weekend Update sketch, Musk played a "financial expert" and joked that Dogecoin was "a hustle".
