The Dencun upgrade activated on March 13, 2024. Its headline change, EIP-4844, added blobs, a cheaper temporary data space for rollups. Fees on layer 2 networks like Arbitrum, Optimism and Base dropped sharply right after.
It was a big step in Ethereum's plan to scale through layer 2s rather than making the base chain much faster.
