The Shanghai and Capella upgrade, often called Shapella, went live on April 12, 2023. Its main change, EIP-4895, let validators withdraw staked ether and rewards for the first time since staking began in December 2020.
Some people expected a wave of selling once withdrawals opened. In practice exits were processed through a rate limited queue, and new deposits soon outpaced withdrawals. Ether's price rose in the days after the upgrade.
Removing the lock up made staking less risky, which helped liquid staking services and later the spot ether ETF debate.
