Bitcoin Pizza Day

Laszlo Hanyecz pays 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, the first well known real world purchase.

No price shown: our sourced price data for Bitcoin does not cover May 22, 2010.

On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz in Jacksonville, Florida paid 10,000 BTC to another forum user, who ordered two Papa John's pizzas delivered to him. Hanyecz had posted the offer on the BitcoinTalk forum four days earlier. It is widely remembered as the first time bitcoin bought a physical good.

The deal valued the coins at roughly 41 dollars in total, based on the price of the pizzas, which tells you how little bitcoin was worth then. There was no liquid exchange price yet, so we do not show a market price for this date.

Fans now mark May 22 as Bitcoin Pizza Day. Hanyecz has said he does not regret it, because the purchase helped show bitcoin could work as money. Hanyecz also contributed code to Bitcoin, including early GPU mining work.
