The Bitcoin network starts with block 0.

Nakamoto mined block 0, the genesis block, on January 3, 2009. Its coinbase text quotes a front page headline from The Times of London about a second bailout for banks. The 50 BTC reward in that block can never be spent.
Days later, on January 12, Hal Finney received 10 BTC from Nakamoto in the first transaction between two people. For more than a year bitcoin had no market price at all.
