Bitcoin's first halving happened at block 210,000 on November 28, 2012. Miners went from earning 50 new BTC per block to 25. The rule is written into the code: every 210,000 blocks, roughly four years, new supply is cut in half until the 21 million cap is reached.

This was the first live test of the schedule, and the network kept running normally.
