Halving

A halving is a scheduled cut in the new coins miners earn per block. Bitcoin halves every 210,000 blocks, about every four years.

In Bitcoin, the block subsidy started at 50 BTC and halves every 210,000 blocks: 25 BTC in 2012, 12.5 in 2016, 6.25 in 2020 and 3.125 in 2024. That schedule is why total supply approaches but never exceeds 21 million.

Halvings are often linked to later price rallies, but there have only been four, and each happened amid other big market events.
