Sam Bankman Fried's FTX and Alameda Research were among Solana's biggest backers and holders of SOL. When a run on FTX began in early November 2022, traders feared Alameda's SOL would be dumped. The price fell more than 50 percent in a few days; the chart marks November 9, when the crisis peaked, and FTX filed for bankruptcy on November 11.
Projects that had relied on FTX, such as the Serum exchange, had to be forked by the community. SOL ended 2022 far below its 2021 peak.
The FTX bankruptcy estate later sold much of its SOL in auctions in 2024. Solana's recovery in 2023 and 2024, led by meme coins and cheap fees, is one of the bigger comebacks in this site's timelines.
