Proof of stake

Proof of stake secures a blockchain with validators who lock up coins as collateral.

Validators are chosen to propose and attest to blocks in proportion to their stake, and can lose part of it for misbehaving. Ethereum switched to proof of stake in the Merge on September 15, 2022. Solana also uses proof of stake.
