Beacon Chain launches
Ethereum's proof of stake chain starts running alongside mining.

The Beacon Chain went live on December 1, 2020. Validators locked up 32 ETH each to run a new proof of stake chain in parallel with the existing proof of work network. At first it did not process user transactions, and staked ether could not be withdrawn.
It ran for almost two years before the Merge joined the two chains.
