Taproot, defined in BIPs 340, 341 and 342, activated at block 709,632 on November 14, 2021. It added Schnorr signatures and made complex spending conditions cheaper and more private, because they can look like an ordinary payment on chain.
It was the first major Bitcoin upgrade since SegWit and was activated through a miner signaling process called Speedy Trial.
