2017 was the year bitcoin went mainstream. A wave of new buyers, the ICO boom on Ethereum and nonstop media coverage pushed the price up month after month. CME and Cboe launched bitcoin futures in December, right around the top.
The date shown is the highest daily close in our fetched price series for 2017. What followed was a long bear market: through 2018 bitcoin lost more than 80 percent from that close.
